Once when strolling in his garden he saw a flock of swans arrive there. They had golden feathers. He caught one of them but the bird prayed him to set it free and promised to do him a rare service if he let it go. When asked, the bird said that it would go to Damayanti, the daughter of Bhimaraj, the king of Vidarbha, possessing divine beauty and convince her for marrying him. Nala let the bird go. In the course of time the swan, released by Nala, reached Damayanti and narrated to her how rare was the beauty of Nala and that he alone was for her the suitable husband.

Later, in swayambara Damayanti chose Nala as her husband, though Dikpalas — the guardian gods of ten directions, like IndraVarunaAgniYama among others tried unsuccessfully to beguile her mind.

After a period of happy married life and with a daughter and son born to them, Nala lost his state and everything in the game of dice to his brother who ousted him and Damayanti in just one piece of cloth each. Later, by sheer bad luck he lost even that piece of cloth. When on the verge of starvation he asked Damayanti to go to her father but she did not agree.

Hence, one night he left her sleeping in a house they were staying at and went away. Somehow Damayanti reached Chedi and began serving the queen mother. Later, she searched Nala and thus the two were re-united and their kingdom was also regained. As almost always, here too she has been portrayed as a relatively simple person though with divine aura, grace and elegance enshrining her entire being — appearance, demeanour of face and every act.

It however also reveals her pathos that has ever been her destiny, and hence, a feature of her iconography. In the Nayika-bheda tradition seeking to classify women in love under various categories, she is a Hansini Nayika, the most virtuous, beauteous and faithful woman. A secular legend, Damayanti has been a favorite theme of Raja Ravi Vermawho gave to the art of the post- miniature era, unprecedented heights and founded a new school of Indian art.

This painting is very close to his Damayanti painting or rather series of his mythical paintings. This was seen as a degeneration and threat for Indian traditional art. Here, we find the most celebrated painter of 19th century, Raja Ravi Varmawho tried to re-establish Indian art through western methods and technique. Raja Ravi Varma hailed from the princely state of Travancore and is best known for depiction of scenes from Indian mythology and epics.

Ravi Varma is particularly noted for his paintings depicting episodes from the story of Dushyanta and Shakuntala, and Nala and Damayanti, from the Mahabharata. In this most famous painting of his, Shakuntala pretends to remove a thorn from her foot, while actually looking for Dushyantha, while her friends call her bluff. A demi-god in form of a vulture, he was an old friend of Dasharatha and he unsuccessfully tried to rescue Sita from Ravana when Ravana was on his way to Lanka after kidnapping Sita.

It has been vividly depicted by Raja Ravi Varma. In this famous painting, Raja Ravi Varma depicts Draupadi, the common wife of Pandavas, not happy to carry beverages to Keechaka, the army commander of Matsya, during the one year of Agyatvas hiding.

Later Bhima killed him with bare hands, when he disguised as Malini Draupadi and inserted himself in the bed of Keechaka. This was followed by an array of images of gods from the Hindu pantheon, including Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganpati, and Vishnu and his avatars such as Rama and Krishna.

Other images included those of revered gurus and saints such as Adi Shankaracharya and Vaishanava Guru. There were also extensive series of oleographs representing women figures from Hindu mythology such as Draupadi, Damayanti, Menaka, Shakuntala, and Rambha. Oleography: Oleography refers to the method of reproducing an oil painting on paper in such a manner that the exact colors and brushstrokes textures are duplicated. It is also called litho-printing stone printing and requires as many litho-stones as there are colors and tones in a painting.

He was out hunting on the palace grounds and had chanced upon a swan. The swan begged the King to let it go, and gave him its word that it would fly straightaway to the loveliest of ladies and persuade her to become his.

A fascinated Nal let the swan go, which - true to its word - flew across his kingdom to Damayanti. This painting depicts the beautiful Damayanti in commune with the fateful swan that suffused her dreaming and waking thoughts with Nal, flying back and forth between them till he married her and made her his queen.

The painting, inspired by Raja Ravi Verma's unconventional portrayal of women and nature, captures the most important moment of a woman's life - when she learns of and falls in love with the man destined to be hers. The mystical swan had swum across her pond, the lotuspads caught in its feet having been strung up the pillar as it settled atop the same. Damayanti had climbed down the steps leading to the pond in order to greet the irresitibly charming creature.

She pauses right before the swan and gazes at it with the greatest wonder, her stance pensive yet carefree in terms of worldly concerns. The swan is about to close its pristine feathers around its slight body. Note how the twin pillars add balance and wholeness to the entire composition.

Damayanti's otherworldly beauty is not lost on those who gaze upon her. Her attire is distinguished, almost regal. A flowing red saree draped in Southern style around her lissome body, the gold booties sparkling in the outdoor light. The intricately brocaded border of the kapdaa complements the brocade on her matching blouse, a similar tint of pink as the rose in her bun. Her jet black tresses have been parted in the middle, as has traditionally been the norm, and gathered in a plump bun resting on the nape of her softly shadowed neck.

Her dainty jhumke Indian-style danglers have the same golden resplendence as the rest of her jewels - the pearls around her neck, chunky bangles and anklets, and the meenakari rings around her fingers and even her toes.

Do not miss the exquisite emeralds on each of her ornaments, setting off the hint of green that graces the brocade.

The Story of Nala and Damayanti - excerpt

She is wearing a bunch of green glass bangles, which are considered auspicious in this part of the world. As fashionably as the lovely Damayanti is dressed, there is no denying the pensiveness in her stance. Clearly, she is enraptured by the swan's persuasive outpourings and her womanly imagination has been sparked.

Her lusciously lined eyes seem to be looking beyond the swan, into the depths of the lotuspond, probably conjuring up an image of the man to whom she is destined to belong.
