The Legendary Beauty Damayanti. This excellent painting, a large size canvas rendered in oil, represents the legendary beauty Damayanti, the queen of Raja Nalathe king of Nishadha Pradesh, one of the known Janapadas during the period of the Great Indian War — the Mahabharatawith Narwar, situated on a tall hill, its capital.

Once when strolling in his garden he saw a flock of swans arrive there. They had golden feathers. He caught one of them but the bird prayed him to set it free and promised to do him a rare service if he let it go. When asked, the bird said that it would go to Damayanti, the daughter of Bhimaraj, the king of Vidarbha, possessing divine beauty and convince her for marrying him. Nala let the bird go. In the course of time the swan, released by Nala, reached Damayanti and narrated to her how rare was the beauty of Nala and that he alone was for her the suitable husband.
Later, in swayambara Damayanti chose Nala as her husband, though Dikpalas — the guardian gods of ten directions, like IndraVarunaAgniYama among others tried unsuccessfully to beguile her mind.
After a period of happy married life and with a daughter and son born to them, Nala lost his state and everything in the game of dice to his brother who ousted him and Damayanti in just one piece of cloth each. Later, by sheer bad luck he lost even that piece of cloth. When on the verge of starvation he asked Damayanti to go to her father but she did not agree.Azure pipeline variables
Hence, one night he left her sleeping in a house they were staying at and went away. Somehow Damayanti reached Chedi and began serving the queen mother. Later, she searched Nala and thus the two were re-united and their kingdom was also regained. As almost always, here too she has been portrayed as a relatively simple person though with divine aura, grace and elegance enshrining her entire being — appearance, demeanour of face and every act.
It however also reveals her pathos that has ever been her destiny, and hence, a feature of her iconography. In the Nayika-bheda tradition seeking to classify women in love under various categories, she is a Hansini Nayika, the most virtuous, beauteous and faithful woman. A secular legend, Damayanti has been a favorite theme of Raja Ravi Vermawho gave to the art of the post- miniature era, unprecedented heights and founded a new school of Indian art.

It has been vividly depicted by Raja Ravi Varma. In this famous painting, Raja Ravi Varma depicts Draupadi, the common wife of Pandavas, not happy to carry beverages to Keechaka, the army commander of Matsya, during the one year of Agyatvas hiding.
Later Bhima killed him with bare hands, when he disguised as Malini Draupadi and inserted himself in the bed of Keechaka. This was followed by an array of images of gods from the Hindu pantheon, including Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganpati, and Vishnu and his avatars such as Rama and Krishna.
Other images included those of revered gurus and saints such as Adi Shankaracharya and Vaishanava Guru. There were also extensive series of oleographs representing women figures from Hindu mythology such as Draupadi, Damayanti, Menaka, Shakuntala, and Rambha. Oleography: Oleography refers to the method of reproducing an oil painting on paper in such a manner that the exact colors and brushstrokes textures are duplicated. It is also called litho-printing stone printing and requires as many litho-stones as there are colors and tones in a painting.

Varma, who was declared a national treasure by the Indian government indrew inspiration from illustrations of old master paintings, photos of theatrical performances and other images from European magazines, and fused Western techniques with traditional Eastern sensibilities. Portraying the heroine Damayanti in a glimmering sari, Varma combines the classic Indian mythology with European realism to create a painting of brilliant resonance.
The auction also saw Horace van Ruith making a record with his untitled work portraying a Brahmin household fetching an amount of Rs2. The auction featured paintings and works of art across centuries showcasing the wide range of artistic styles and creative output, while underlining the significance and desirability of provenance in the field. Prior to the auction on 14 March in New York, 16 distinguished paintings, including pieces by Varma, Husain and Francis Newton Souza, were showcased at the Leela Palace in New Delhi, offering visitors the opportunity to see the highlights of the collection.
